This project served as an exploration into how sound can be incorporated into our homes through everyday interactions. A door, which when opened, produces a mimicry of the sound of a door. The clicking of the lock represented by the gears and ratchet system, the squeaking of the door opening played by a pair of violin strings, and the ring of a doorbell generated by the strike of a tuning fork. The gear system, based on a mechanical drawing from 1868, allows the central latch gear to turn in the same direction regardless of the direction the handle is turned. Concealed within a wood door, the system is not visible to those entering, promoting a moment of curiosity during a familiar action.
